Artist’s Book
Face is one of my earliest artist book projects, created while I was living in Beijing. As one of the world’s largest cities, Beijing is home to millions of people, each with a unique identity and personal story. I became fascinated by the countless bicycles that filled the city’s streets. Although the bicycles themselves appeared similar, their worn seats carried distinctive marks left by years of daily use. To me, these seats became metaphorical “faces”—anonymous portraits that quietly reflected the lives of their riders.
By photographing bicycle seats throughout Beijing, I created a series of artist books titled Face. Transforming these ordinary urban objects into portraits, the project explores identity, memory, and the relationship between individuals and the city. Looking back, Face marks the beginning of my ongoing interest in revealing the human stories embedded within everyday objects and experiences through graphic design and visual storytelling.
